I have been writing and performing music for over 30 years and finding and audience has always been the goal. I toured the United States for many years before a live audience in every type of venue from small record shops to massive concerts on the beach in front of hundreds of thousands of people.
Every show no matter how big or small would generate a certain amount of interest and people would buy records, stickers, and shirts. They would request my songs on the radio and get excited to see me on television. Yet, there was always some filter keeping me away from actually maintaining a consistent relationship with most of the people who where interested and touched by my music.
Why Twitter works for me
Twitter allows me to keep an ongoing interactive exchange with my fans, other artists, and the creative community as a whole. I have my own station on Twitter that I use as a source platform to the world.
Sometimes I write something witty, funny, or cathartic and other times I offer links to my new songs or other material that I think the world should see. I have reconnected through Twitter with many of the people who I have met over the years and have found an ever increasing audience that is willing to give me a chance.
Granted, not everyone will appreciate what I have to say or like my music but if they find me on Twitter they are coming with their ears and mind open. Twitter offers a certain amount of credibility that a blog on its own cannot possess. Rarely do people like to be the only one standing in an empty room watching an artist perform. Twitter takes that sense of insecurity away and once you have a few followers on Twitter suddenly new people are willing to take the steps to walk in and listen.

i am probably not utilising twitter as much as i should, but i am also not willing to inundate people with updates. i’ve just blogged about this excessive and rude use of updating and there needs to be some middle ground between informing and spamming. too many people are abusing this tool and ruining it for others. hopefully some social networking etiquette will eventually show itself.
